Terrestrial Laser Scans

Exploring the thermodynamical link between structural complexity and resilience of forests

In subproject "Terrestrial Laser Scan", Dominik Seidel and Sarah Kabache from the University of Göttingen are investigating the relationship between structure and potential resilience by linking the amount of energy emitted by a forest (radiation) to its structure. It is assumed that a greater absorption of energy (sunlight) in the forest ecosystem leads to increased adaptability and resilience. 3D laser scan data is used to record the structure and satellite data is used to record the surface temperature of the forest.
