Forest Resilience and Water

In subproject "Water Quality", Harald Biester and Lina Oskamp from TU Braunschweig are investigating how a change in the litter cover in Lower Saxony's forests, caused by the transition from spruce monocultures to mixed forests, influences the soil composition and thus the water quality of forest drainage systems. For this purpose, parameters such as the content of nutrients (nitrate, phosphate and carbon) and the behaviour of trace elements (heavy metals) are examined by means of water and soil samples. The connection between forest changes and the quality of water discharged from forest systems will be investigated in order to deliver information regarding adaptation measures to increase resilience to climate-induced forest changes.
